Walk - Thorndon Country Park

Thorndon Country Park is in two parts, the northern section on a gravel ridge and the southern part on clay soil lower down. The two parts are now linked by Old Thorndon Pastures, which is farmland that has been restored to a traditional farming landscape with small hedged fields, grazed by cattle. The park offers a variety of habitats including ancient woodland, parkland, ponds, a marsh and meadow. It's also home to the famous Gruffalo trail as well as a cafe/visitor centre and free to use dog agility course.

Good for: cafe and refreshments, toilets, picnic areas, various routes suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, varied walk with woodland, fields, lakes etc, dog agility course, large park

Bad for: dogs that are interested in livestock/deer as there are cows, sheep and deer at various points, no free parking, can be busy at the Gruffalo trail

Parking: There are two separate car parks. Both are pay and display.

The North car park - Unnamed Road, Warley, Brentwood CM13 3RZ

is closer to the Gruffalo trail and visitor centre/cafe and is the busier of the two.

The South car park - West Horndon, Brentwood, CM13 3LH is quieter and is also near the dog agility park and picnic/BBQ areas.

Maps:

Route: There are many different routes you can take but we like to do a loop starting from the south carpark going left on the map and walking up through the old thorndon pastures and into childerwitch wood leading to proposal wood where the gruffalo trail is. We then head right on the map towards the golf course and down through the field leading to the rookery and back to mill wood.
